Accelerated mobilization of organic carbon from retrogressive thaw slumps on the northern Taymyr Peninsula

Abstract. With climate change, Arctic hillslopes above ice-rich permafrost are vulnerable to enhanced mass wasting and organic carbon mobilization. In this study we use TanDEM-X-derived (TerraSAR-X add-on for Digital Elevation Measurement; synthetic-aperture radar) digital elevation models document an approximately 43-fold increase in thaw slumping concomitant 28-fold mobilization on the northern Taymyr Peninsula from 2010 2021. The available observations allowed us compare two time periods, 2010/11 2016/17 2017/18 2020/21, contrast retrogressive slump (RTS) activity between these periods. We find that all quantities describing RTS increased observed period. total volumetric change per year about 0.17×106 7.4×106m3yr-1, a increase. surge is mainly driven by initiation of new RTS, indicated 17-fold active numbers 82 1404 relatively low average rate 2.3. annual Sentinel-2 imagery, number detected RTSs subregion 10-fold 2020. This coincides with severe heatwave occurred Siberia area-to-volume scaling varied only slightly over time, despite 2020 heatwave, indicating robustness relationship such event. To estimate slump-mobilized carbon, intersected changes soil (SOC) map, contrasting assumptions deep pool massive-ice content. estimated SOC increases 28-fold. normalization our region yields values 11gCyr-1m-2 confidence interval 5 38gCyr-1m-2. A comparison independent net ecosystem exchange 4.1±13.0gCyr-1m-2 illustrates importance cycle. These results underscore important but commonly neglected component cycle particularly sensitive extreme events.
